| Geographical
ReportTable-1A presents the geographic area of operation of the
organisation on the basis of an urban and rural divide. It is interesting to note that the
present population of NWFP, estimated at around 17.5 million, is mostly dispersed in rural
areas and only about 16% people live in urban areas (compared to 30% of the entire country
average).
This accounts for the fact that 82% NGOs have a rural focus as compared to 5% that are operating in the urban areas. 13% NGOs have both a rural and urban focus. Table-1A also provides the details of total number of NGOs in each district, including the cumulative total (1739), that were surveyed during the preparation of the present Database. It is not surprising that this figure does not tally with the records of the government agencies or other sources for a number of reasons. First, since there is no system of renewal of registration, the official figures also take into account many organisations that no longer exist on ground or have become inactive. Second, the government records do not take into account those organisations that are presently under processing (i.e. have applied for registration but have not been granted a legal entity). The districts with the highest percent of rural-focused programme work are Batagram & Hangu Districts; and the district with the highest percent of urban-focused programme work is Dera Ismail Khan. The districts in which there tends to be high focus on both rural and urban activities are in Bannu Division. |
